Chapter 10: Thermal Properties of Matter
NCERT Class 11 Physics, Part II, Chapter 10. 6 lessons, 16 narrated 3D videos, 8 simulations and 12 quiz questions, following the textbook section by section.
- Temperature and its measurementPour hot tea into a steel tumbler on a cold winter morning. Touch it after a few minutes: the tumbler is warm, and the tea is a little cooler.
- Thermal expansionRailway tracks are laid with small gaps between the rails, and long bridges rest on rollers at one end. Why? Because things get longer when they get hotter.
- Specific heat capacity and calorimetryPut a pan with 1 litre of water and a pan with 2 litres on identical burners. The bigger amount takes about twice as long to warm up by the same amount.
- Change of state and latent heatMatter is usually found as a solid, a liquid or a gas. Going from one of these states to another is called a change of state.
- Conduction, convection and radiationHeat can travel in three ways: conduction, convection and radiation. Let us start with conduction.
- Newton’s law of coolingPour a cup of hot chai and leave it on the table. At first it cools quickly. Later, as it nears room temperature, it cools more and more slowly.
